Case 3-Bid’ah Issues




The sister has asked three inter-related questions; regarding reciting Surah Yaseen for the deceased, if the Sahabah brought anything new to the religion and she also wishes to understand Bid’ah in detail.

I shall attempt to answer her question to the best of my ability by the Help and Mercy of Allah ‎ﷻ‬.

First we should know what bid’ah means
It is defined as any invented way in religion that is aimed at worshipping or drawing closer to Allah. This means anything that is not referred to specifically in Sharee’ah, and for which there is no evidence(daleel) in the Qur’aan or Sunnah, and which was not known at the time of the Prophet‎ﷺ‎‬ and his Companions. At the same time, it is quite obvious that this definition does not include worldly inventions (such as cars, washing machines etc). With regard to ordinary matters of habit and customs, these are not called bid’ah(innovations) in the religious sense, these are not the things that the Prophet‎ﷺ‎‬‎ was warning us against.
“I urge you to adhere to my way(sunnah) and the way of the rightly-guided successors(al-khulafa -al-raashidoon)who came after me. Hold fast to it and bite into it with your molar-teeth.(i.e,cling firmly to it) and beware of newly invented matters.”

The Sahabah never approved of any kind of innovations or bid’ah and were quite fearful to introduce anything new to the religion as it was already quite perfect according to Prophet‎ﷺ‎‬ in his Last Sermon. Allah ‎ﷻ‬
revealed to him in Arafaah:
“This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have chosen Islam for you as your religion.
“Surah Maidah 5:3.
Therefore something which is already perfect does not need any additions or deductions, no matter how long lasting or beneficial it may seem to us .
About reading of Surah YaSeen we have to make a distinction here between the two issues, reading Surah YaSeen for one who is dying and reading it for one who has died. With regard to reading it for the one who is dying, this practice has been reported from some of the Sahabah. Imam Ahmed reported in his Musnad from Safwaan: “My shaykhs told me that they were with Ghudayf ibn al-Haarith al Thumaani when he was dying. He said ‘Can anyone of you read the YaSeen?’ The reasons for this is that because it eases the pain of the death, the Surah contains good news of Paradise, and makes passage of the soul easier.
As regards reading Surah YaSeen for one who has died there is no Saheeh Hadeeth to indicate that it should be done, as there is no benefit in reciting YaSeen, or any other Surah from the Qur’an for the deceased. It is a bid’ah which we should avoid and warn others against.
The Prophet‎ﷺ‎‬ stated reportedly that “Every newly invented thing is a bid’ah (innovation), every bid’ah is a going astray, and every going astray will be in the Fire.”

Opening the door to bid’ah leads to changing the deen and opens the way for personal whims and opinions, because every innovator introduces it as something good. It leads to the cancellation of Sunnnah practices and the ways of the Salaf. We ask Allah to save us from the misguidance and from all trials. Ameen.
