The Sister is in a situation where she is caring for child with special needs, some of her days are good, some are challenging. The question she has posed is about her intentions. She want to know if every time she does an action, should she do it for the sake of allah, if not will she not be rewarded for it.
This is the very first question we received and the first question being the purity of intentions and doing things for the sake of Allahﷻ.
To me it is an indication to check our intentions as well. We started this group to serve Allahﷻ and down the line will our intentions remain the same? are we exempted from the waswasas of shaitaan?
No we are not. So this is a reminder for us as well, to time and again keep our intentions in check.
To answer the sisters question, Yes, we have to do everything for the sake of Allahﷻ, she needs to keep renewing her intentions everytime she takes care of her child. We as human beings often times get frustrated by the duties we are entrusted with, and the challenges that we have to face. For this sister it is taking care of her child for other’s there are other challenges but for each and every one of us the challenges are present. And when we face these challenges we have to understand and accept that it’s by the will of Allahﷻ, and start facing these tests head-on with sabr and to gain Allah’s pleasure, and in turn Heﷻ makes it easy for us and puts abundant barakah in it for us.
Renewing our intentions and always keeping our thoughts on doing actions for the sake of Allah ﷻ is not an easy task, shaitaan comes to us and makes us forget for whose sake we had intended to do it in the first place. but that’s okay, as we are all human beings and Allahﷻ calls us insaan and one of the meanings of insaan is the forgetful one. We are by nature forgetful beings. And what’s important for us is that we adhere to obedience and go back and correct ourselves and remind ourselves over and over again.
Sufiyaan At Tawri رحمه الله was a prominent scholar of hadith and he said:
I did not find upon myself, I did not encounter and I did not experience anything harder upon myself than my niyyah, my intention.
It is a given we all have good days and bad days, the bad days are present in our lives so we can appreciate the good ones and they help us get closer to Allahﷻ, and so that we can show tawakkul and reliance on Him. The only One who is The All Powerful and the only One who can handle all our affairs in the best way possible and that we are nothing with out His Guidance and Mercy and Help.
These bad days or down days that we experience help us get back to Allahﷻ in a much better way with eeman as our aid.
The sister is taking care of her child anyway as he is depended on her for support, she is doing her household chores anyway, and this concept of ‘purity of intention’ is applicable not just for someone who is a caregiver of someone with special needs but for every single one of us, no matter what we do, be it household chores or anythings else, doing it for the sake of Allah only adds hasanth on our scale.
If we are to imagine the scenario of standing on The Day of Judgement and looking for our good deeds and we cannot find them, we think and wonder where are the deeds that we used to do, but we do not find it just because we did not intend it for Allah’s sake. سبحان الله May Allahﷻ protect us from that…. أمين يا رب
There is also a risk of starting out to doing something for Allah’s sake and slipping on our way. The chance of getting carried away by the praises people throw our way, and our intentions changing to please people rather than Allahﷻ, that’s a major red alert and we must turn to Allahﷻ in repentance and seek His forgiveness and seek refuge and ask Him to protect us from Riya.
In conclusion, yes we have to check and recheck our intention time and again, in order to gain rewards. Cause no deed is accepted if not done for the sake of Allahﷻ.
May Allahﷻ grant us Sabr and keep our intentions pure and protect us from Riya.
أمين با رب العلمين
